Words: Attributed variously to King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden; Jacob Fabricius (1593-1654), a chaplain in Adolphus' army; and Johann Michael Altenburg (1584-1640), a minister in Erfurt, Germany (Verzage nicht du HSuflein klein). Catherine Winkworth translated the lyrics from German to English in Lyra Germanica, 1855.
Gustavus Adolphus' troops reportedly sang this hymn on the morning of the Battle of Lntzen (in the Thirty Years' War), November 6, 1632, in which the king died. Music: "Ravendale," Walter Stokes (1847-?)
