Charles Wesley's brother John quoted Isaac Watts as saying of this hymn, "that single poem, Wrestling Jacob, was worth all the verses he himself had written." Shortly after Charles' death, John tried to teach this hymn, but broke into tears when he reached the line, "my company before is gone, and I am left alone with Thee."
